The Position Statement: Educating the Public Health Workforce was developed to formalise the guiding principles underlying the work of the Advocacy in Action Consultation Group and subgroups. The document was developed through an in-depth collaborative process and integrates ideas and discussion points from public health academics across member institutions, including Heads of School, CAPHIA representatives, governance groups and members. On 9 December, CAPHIA submitted the final written response to the Australian Government discussion paper, Role and Functions of an Australian Centre for Disease Control. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed gaps in “the size, training, structure and credentialing of the public health workforce”. It is essential that the Public Health workforce is skilled and qualified to perform current and future roles needed to protect the health of Australasian populations and communities.
CAPHIA advocated for further investment in the public health workforce pipeline via:
- Dedicated Australian Commonwealth Support Placements and additional funded placements across Australasia;

We undertook a global analysis of public health competency sets (Coombe, et al. 2020), mapped against the Global Charter for the Public’s Health (Lomazzi, 2016) , which is endorsed by the WHO. The Global Charter is a key document which sets out the services and functions of public health.
