2023 Program: 4 x Paid Internships Available

CAPHIA are pleased to call for applications for our 2023 Internship Program. The 2023 CAPHIA Internship Program is designed to optimise the value provided to competitively selected interns by embedding them within a major CAPHIA Program and existing governance to support each intern and provide practical public health experience. The Interns will work closely with CAPHIA staff and the relevant governance group to progress their work and deliver tangible outputs and outcomes. Interns will be paid a stipend of $1000 in recognition of their contribution and to enhance equity and work-study-life balance. 

Program Overview
  • Duration: 6 month internship from mid-April to mid-October 2023 (exact dates may be negotiated)
  • Commitment: 7.5 hours per week.  The pattern of work may be a regular day of the week or as agreed with CAPHIA Executive Director, Holly Donaldson
  • Remuneration: $1000 stipend
  • Location: Remote
  • Eligibility: Current students from CAPHIA member institutions are invited to apply

Internship Details (about each internship)

This intern will work with the Advocacy In Action Consultation Group and its Subgroups to progress the Advocacy in Action Plan 2022-2024.

Best suits: students interested in advocacy, public health awareness, submission writing etc.
Tasks:

  • Working with CAPHIA staff, Chairs and the subgroups to develop and progress the Advocacy program
  • Development of social media updates, website posts, newsletter articles
  • Contribution to communications such as publications, position statements, submissions Croakey articles, In Touch blog etc.

CAPHIA Competencies are the knowledge, skills abilities that public health professionals and practitioners are expected to possess to effectively carry out their work. CAPHIA Competencies inform the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across Australasian universities. The next edition of the CAPHIA competencies is in development. Read more.

This Competencies Renewal Intern will focus on development of the CAPHIA competencies 3rd edition.

Governance: Competencies Renewal Subgroup

Chair: A/Prof Katherine Baldock, University of South Australia

Best suits an intern: with an interest in public health teaching and assessment, curriculum design and project management

Tasks:

  • Working with CAPHIA staff, the Chair and the subgroup to develop the new CAPHIA competencies
  • Development of social media updates, website posts, newsletter articles
  • Connecting with public health practitioners to showcase public health education resources and/or practice in CAPHIA events (e.g. Forum
  • If applicable, contribution to communications such as publications, conference proceedings etc.

The Teaching and Learning Intern will contribute to the third edition of the CAPHIA Competencies by supporting the creation of an open access public health education resource database. The database will showcase resources which support both teaching and learning of the CAPHIA Competencies across the diverse landscape of public health.

Governance: Teaching and Learning Resources Subgroup

Chair: A/Prof Hannah Wechkunanukul, Torrens University

Best suits and intern: with an interest in teaching/education research, advocacy, stakeholder and project management

Tasks:

  • Identification of open access public health resource for the CAPHIA Public Health Education Resource Database to support teaching and learning of the third edition competencies.
  • Working with CAPHIA staff, the Chair and the subgroup to map resources to the CAPHIA framework, develop a vetting process and summarise how these can be used in practice
  • Development of social media updates, website posts, newsletter articles
  • Connecting with public health practitioners to showcase public health education resources and/or practice in CAPHIA events (e.g. Forum)
  • If applicable, contribution to communications such as publications, Croakey articles, In Touch blog etc.

The Community Consultation Intern will contribute to the third edition of the CAPHIA Competencies by supporting a robust consultation with the public health community. To enable competencies which reflect best practice public health CAPHIA will be conducting a wide-scale evaluation. This represents a wonderful opportunity to connect with local and internal public health academics, professionals and organisations to best reflect the standards we seek.

Governance: Consultation Subgroup

Chair: Dr David Lim, Western Sydney University

Best suits and intern: who has an interest in program evaluation, stakeholder and project management to connect with individuals and organisations across the public health community

Tasks:

  • Working with CAPHIA staff, the Chair and the subgroup to:
    • finalise the CAPHIA Competencies evaluation plan
    • help run the member (internal) consultation including workshops, CAPHIA Forum events and written submission requests
    • help organise the community (external) consultation including written submission requests and structured interviews / zoom meetings
  • Development of social media updates, website posts, newsletter articles etc.
  • If applicable, contribution to communications such as publications, position statements, Croakey articles, In Touch blog etc.

Benefits and Outcomes

The CAPHIA Internship Program 2023 provides member institutions with the opportunity for their students to receive on the job experience in supporting and advocating for public health teaching and learning, and research while developing their business acumen and social media skills. 
CAPHIA Interns will obtain specific experience in an area of practice-based academic public health. This may include:

  • Translation and application of public health skills and knowledge (providing real-world experience to obtain paid employment in the field)
  • Professional writing opportunities such as contributing to submissions, position statements, and project management documentation
  • Advocacy and Engagement through social media and traditional media
  • Participation in stakeholder engagement through working group meetings, workshops and webinars.

Interns will be provided with direct access to world-class public health academics across Australasia and have networking opportunities within both the academic space and in public health more broadly.

2023 CAPHIA Interns will receive a letter confirming their participation upon successful completion of the program in addition to their $1000 stipend. 

 

Previous Internship Programs:

The 2021 Social Media Internship Program selected 10 students from member organisations to participate. The interns produced a number of high quality blogs and other social media posts to promote the vital role of public health across Australasia and globally.
