Highlight of FY23-24

Professor Rebecca Ivers AM, CAPHIA Chair of the Board of Directors
  1. Professional Development & events
  • Awarded 8 paid internships from over 200 applications across 7 institutions in Australia and Fiji
  • Hosted the 2023 Teaching & Learning Forum in Adelaide with 135+ attendees, featuring international speakers and oral presentations, challenge rooms and solution rooms
  • Organized the 2023 Heads of Schools Summit with 40+ leaders, including a keynote from Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly
  • Celebrated excellent teaching and excellent research through the 2023 CAPHIA Awards. Professor Rosemary McKenzie was awarded the CAPHIA Medal

 

2. Advocacy and Partnerships

  • Submitted key policy recommendations for the Commonwealth Government COVID-19 Inquiry
  • Advocacy activity included contributed to National Health and Climate Strategy consultations to guide the inaugural Strategy and the Consumer Strategy for Health and Wellbeing
  • Participated in the World Health Summit, with CAPHIA Chair Professor Rebecca Ivers co-chairing a session on workforce development in the pacific region
  • Expanded global partnerships through active membership in the Global Network for Academic Public Health including 3x member universities being awarded This Is Public Health Global Grants 

 

3. New & expanded initiatives 

  • Launched new CAPHIA Networks to connect public health educators and researchers, including the successful Qualitative Methodologies & Methods Network and Design Thinking in Public Health Network
  • The refreshed Early Career Academics Committee delivering targeted programs and monthly virtual catch-ups, informed by a needs assessment
  • Appointed a steering committee, advisory board and stakeholder group to develop the third edition of CAPHIA competencies framework. Established a three-phase evidence-informed approach to develop and structure contemporary knowledge, skills and attributes for public health professionals 
  • Created an expanding library of open-access resources, with video content reaching viewers across 7+ countries

 

4. Membership and Governance

  • Represented 40 member institutions across Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea

  • Maintained strong financial position 

  • Welcomed new Public Officer Professor Brenton Prosser, UNSW Canberra

  • Grew social media presence to 2000+ LinkedIn followers

  • Total equity: $262,749.55 (including $258,217.73 retained earnings and $4,531.82 surplus)
  • Main revenue sources:
    • Full Memberships ($205,000.00)
    • Affiliate Memberships ($6,750.00)
    • Teaching and Learning Forum income ($26,808.62)
  • Major expenses:
    • Staff salaries including superannuation and oncosts: $198,380.24
  • Cash reserves are reported as healthy and at expected levels
 

2. Audit Outcome:

The independent auditor confirmed that:
  • Financial statements are properly drawn up and give a true and fair view
  • Proper accounting and other records have been kept
  • The audit was conducted in accordance with association rules
  • All expenses are in line with budgeted projections
 
3. Key Risks and Mitigation Strategies:
Risks:
  • Heavy reliance on membership income
  • External fiscal pressures on universities increasingly likelihood of reducing our membership base
  • Transition to independent entity in FY24-25
  • Costs associated with Competencies Third Edition development
Mitigation Strategies:
  • Income diversification measures initiated including:
    • Forum/event sponsorship
    • Webinar fees for non-members
    • Advertising fees
    • Plans to scale up new income sources
  • Need identified to develop additional revenue streams
  • Leveraging retained earnings to fund Competencies development
