Climate change is transforming public health. Are we preparing our graduates to respond?
Climate change is one of the greatest threats to population health, yet global evidence suggests that public health education is not keeping pace.
The 2025 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change found that while 66% of surveyed public health institutions offered climate and health education, only 20% of public health students were receiving this education.
We need to do better — and we need the evidence to drive change.
CAPHIA is calling for every school of public health across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific to participate in the 2026–27 Global Survey on Climate Education in Public Health Schools.
Led by the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education (GCCHE), in partnership with the Global Network for Academic Public Health (GNAPH), the survey provides evidence for the Lancet Countdown and helps inform global education priorities, workforce development, policy advocacy and investment.
Importantly, it helps us understand not simply whether climate change is being taught, but whether graduates are developing the capabilities to translate evidence into action — including climate adaptation, mitigation, policy influence and advocacy.
Your school’s participation matters. Whether climate and health education is well established, emerging or not yet embedded in your curriculum, your response will help build a more representative picture of progress and identify where greater support is needed.
The survey takes just 5–15 minutes, responses are confidential, and findings will help strengthen our collective case for climate-ready public health education.
Complete the survey by 1 February 2027.
Together, we can ensure the next generation of public health professionals is equipped not only to understand the climate crisis, but to lead the response.
