UTS Building 8 is the Dr. Chau Chak Wing Building, famously nicknamed the “crumpled paper bag” building for its unique brick design by architect Frank Gehry. It houses the UTS Business School and is a prominent landmark on the UTS City campus (Haymarket precinct).
Below you will find a downloadable campus map clearly identifying Building 8, as well as step-by-step walking directions from key entrances (Central Station, Ultimo Road, and The Goods Line walkway).
Directions from Central Station to Building 8
Building 8 is approximately a 10-minute walk from Central Station via a convenient pedestrian route. Follow these steps for an easy walk to the “Paper Bag” building from Central Station:
- Exit Central Station at South Concourse: Follow signs toward “Railway Square/George Street” and leave the station via the South Concourse, which leads to the Devonshire Street exit. This will bring you into the Devonshire Street pedestrian tunnel.
- Walk through Devonshire Street Tunnel: Continue straight through the Devonshire Street Tunnel, which runs underneath George Street. This well-lit tunnel will take you toward Ultimo. At the end of the tunnel, you’ll come out onto The Goods Line walkway.
- Follow The Goods Line pedestrian walkway south (in the direction of the UTS campus) all the way to Building 8. You will pass by other UTS buildings and open public spaces as you walk.
- Look for Building 8 near the Ultimo Road overpass: As you progress, you will cross a pedestrian bridge over Ultimo Road on The Goods Line. Immediately after crossing Ultimo Road, you will see the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building (Building 8) adjacent to the walkway. It’s hard to miss – look for the building’s distinctive wavy brick façade (the “paper bag” design). Building 8 is right next to the Ultimo Road pedestrian bridge on The Goods Line.
- Enter Building 8 from The Goods Line or street: The entrance directly off The Goods Line walkway will lead you into Level 3 of Building 8. Take the stairs or lift just inside to go down to the main lobby if needed. (Alternatively, you can walk down to street level and enter via the Ultimo Road entrance on Level 2.) WHAT LEVEL DO WE NEED TO GO TO??
Directions from Ultimo Road to Building 8
If you’re approaching the UTS campus from the Ultimo Road side (for example, from George Street/Quay Street near Chinatown or Railway Square), use these directions to find Building 8:
- Start at Quay Street and Ultimo Road intersection: From the Haymarket/Chinatown side (near Paddy’s Markets and UTS Building 5 on Quay St), head west along Ultimo Road toward the UTS campus. You will be walking in the direction of Darling Harbour (away from George St).
- Walk along Ultimo Road (under the overpass): Continue straight on Ultimo Road for a few blocks. After about 5 minutes, you will go under a large elevated walkway – this is the old railway Goods Line turned into a pedestrian path crossing above Ultimo Road. Use the sidewalk under the overpass and keep going forward.
- Immediately after passing under the walkway you will see the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building (Building 8) right next to you. The building’s address is 14 Ultimo Road, and it spans the block between Ultimo Road and Mary Ann Street.
- Enter via the Ultimo Road entrance: The main public entrance to Building 8 is on Ultimo Road, at street level. Look for the glass entry doors and UTS signage at the base of the building. (This entrance brings you in on Level 2 of Building 8.) Step inside here to reach the lobby and reception area. WHAT LEVEL DO WE NEED TO GO TO??
Directions from The Goods Line Walkway to Building 8
Many visitors and students reach Building 8 via The Goods Line, a pedestrian walkway that runs through the campus. If you’re already on The Goods Line (for example, coming from the Powerhouse Museum/Darling Harbour end or from the Devonshire Tunnel/Central end), here’s how to get to Building 8:
- Head toward Ultimo on The Goods Line: From the northern entrance (near Harris Street by the Powerhouse Museum), walk south along The Goods Line toward Ultimo. If you started at the Central Station end, simply keep following the path toward the campus. The Goods Line is an elevated, straight pedestrian route with rail tracks artifacts and seating along the way.
- Continue past campus landmarks: As you stroll, you’ll pass by UTS buildings and public spaces. The route is direct – stay on the main path. You might notice a stair access at Mary Ann Street (one access point to the walkway) near the UTS Business School. Keep going until you approach the next overhead crossing.
- Find Building 8 near the Ultimo Road crossing: As you near the Ultimo Road overpass, prepare to see Building 8. The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building (UTS Building 8) is situated right alongside The Goods Line path, just by the Ultimo Road pedestrian bridge. Look for the large, curved brick structure – it will be adjacent to the walkway.
- Enter Building 8 from The Goods Line level: You’ll find an entrance directly from the Goods Line into Building 8. This door brings you in on Level 3 of the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building. Go through the glass doors here (often staffed by security or with UTS signage). Once inside, you can take the stairs or elevator down one level to the main lobby if needed. (Alternatively, you can exit the Goods Line via the stairs/elevator to Ultimo Road and enter on Level 2.) WHAT LEVEL DO WE NEED TO GO TO??
