For the first time CAPHIA is running a Public Health Hackathon in Brisbane 24th – 26th September, 2024. The first of its kind in Australasia, CAPHIA, The School of Public Health, University of Queensland and UQ Ventures will bring together public health students, early career academics, entrepreneurs, community, and industry innovators to investigate a public health problem.

This event brings together current and future leaders to end domestic violence by leveraging public health approaches with design thinking principles.

Student teams are supported by both mentors (Public Health academics, industry and community DV experts), and Design Thinking Ambassadors (entrepreneurs, start-up and spin out founders) to utilse both topic-specific knowledge and design thinking processes.

Theme: Preventing Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is a critical public health issue that has significant and long-lasting impacts on health and wellbeing – particularly for women and their children. Domestic Violence occurs in all sections of society however it disproportionally effects priority populations.

Driven by gender inequality and reinforced through individual behaviours and beliefs, social norms, policies, laws and organisations, a whole society and systems approach is needed to prevent domestic violence. To find out more about the theme see our FAQs page

Everyone has a role to play in ending domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Hackathon Challenges:

Public Health student teams will choose one of the following challenges to collaboratively investigate, analyse and build a solution to contribute to the prevention of domestic violence:

HOW MIGHT WE

Create safe and equal environments in the communities that we belong?

Taking a whole-of-setting or whole-of-population approach in digital and real-world spaces

HOW MIGHT WE

Work with men and boys to take action and become allies in preventing domestic and family violence?

Identifying partnered approaches to building capacity and capability.

HOW MIGHT WE

Challenge gender norms, practices and structures?

Ideating solutions which progress beyond individual behaviours and beliefs.
